Oktoberfest’s first night time was lovely and heat, and the broad aisles between the cubicles on 2nd and third shortly obtained crowded with Cincinnatians in hen hats and lederhosen, consuming lots of meat and carbohydrates washed down with beer.
I was there, too. I visited some old favorites, and tried a few new things this year. There is no way to eat it all, so I just kind of make a stab at it to come up with a few recommendations. Here’s what I liked best:
Lubecker’s schnitzel dinner
This is a new booth at the fest, claiming to be Cincinnati’s most authentic German kitchen. Their schnitzel dinner is hand-breaded in the booth, fried crisp, and served with a rich, creamy delicious jager, or mushroom sauce. For $11, it comes with two sides: I got homemade spaetzle and rotkohl, or red cabbage (vegetables!), cooked soft, with a subtle spicing of cloves. Highly recommended.
The Berlin-style currywurst from Germania Schnitzel Haus
I don’t always love this odd combination of German sausage and spicy curry. But this version, with a mett cut in pieces, sauerkraut and the highly spiced curry ketchup, was awfully good. From past years, I really recommend their cabbage rolls, too.
The pumpkin strudel from Original Strudel Factory
It wasn’t my idea to get this, but my friend did, and it was a real find. A wonderful warm, sweet pumpkin pie filling squeezing out from the flaky strudel dough it was wrapped in.
My choice of strudel was the apricot-almond kind from Heidi’s strudel. Also very recommended.
The Tricorne paw paw beer collaboration from Urban Artifact and Sam Adams
Sweet-tart, but bitter with hops, sour and refreshing, with a wonderful tropical fruit aroma. My guess is it was named for Sam Adams hat.
