Lee Thompson Young, 24: RIP
Raúl Raúl Rivero [r. Aged 75 on 27 September 2018], became a symbol of the revolution and won a sainthood when he received the Red Cross Peace Prize in 2005, received by Cuba’s highest-ranking leaders.
Last year, Esteban Chaves, a director, documentarian and former collaborator on the Republic newspaper Rivero was editing, explained how Rivero would arrive by plane on Friday evenings, speed down and around city streets posing as a merchant to distribute free copies of the newspaper.
In 2013, Rivero was thrilled to be hired by the US business production company 30 Rock Productions to direct its 15-part Cradle to Grave, a documentary about US citizenship.
By the time the producers dropped him in Cuba in January 2016, Raúl Rivero seemed to have reached a professional nadir. He said his then girlfriend had dumped him. They were soon living separately in Havana. “We were living together, and then life didn’t come back together,” he said then.
