Republican lawmakers are threatening to punish the only Arizona Democrat currently serving in Congress for insulting several female staffers on a radio program.
Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) has been stripped of his seat on a House committee and several of his local offices are now closed in response to comments he made on a conservative radio program in the middle of last week. The Arizona Republic reported on Friday night that Rep. Ander Crenshaw (R-Ariz.) will limit Gallego’s office access next week as well.
“As a Muslim-American who serves in an office with a significant number of Muslim-Americans, he has been unprofessional, hostile and unaccepting,” Gallego said of Crenshaw on Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle. “We call him out as a hateful man, and I’ve told the staff to make the calls to reach out to Senator McCain.”
Crenshaw spoke about Gallego in separate phone interviews on the same show.
“You have to remember who he voted against: people who are serving our country. He voted against a woman who’s fighting cancer and not afraid to go back into the classroom to fight for her education,” Crenshaw said. “He voted against a 7-year-old who has cancer, and who is so brave, and he’s out there crying every time when he doesn’t see his family. He voted against a life of having a wife and children, and he doesn’t feel an ounce of guilt.”
Crenshaw is a former Navy Seal, a longtime House member and a frequent visitor to Afghanistan and Iraq.
