Enquirer beat reporter Tom Groeschen takes a take a look at the College of Cincinnati’s soccer recreation Saturday towards Miami College.

When UC runs

Prime rusher Mike Boone (one hundred forty four yards, 2 TDs this yr) twisted an ankle on the ultimate play at Michigan last week. Boone missed some practice time this week, and his status is iffy for Miami. Redshirt freshman Gerrid Doaks may be seeing more time. Doaks was productive in his college debut last week, with 25 yards rushing (4.2 per carry) and a 25-yard catch that was UC’s longest reception of the day. If Boone can’t go, true freshman Michael Warren II also could get extra work. Any kind of spark would help, as UC ranks 113th nationally in rushing offense.

When UC passes

QB Hayden Moore has thrown four TD passes and two interceptions this year, and the interceptions both were pick-six returns by Michigan in a 36-14 loss. Moore is completing only 47.1 percent of his passes. Some of that is on Moore, some on pass protection, some on receivers not getting open, some on players dropping passes. Backup QB Ross Trail might play some, if conditions dictate. UC is 115th nationally in passing offense, with no vertical game. The longest pass reception has been 25 yards, by running back Doaks.

When Miami runs

The RedHawks have upgraded their formerly atrocious run game, but still rank just 86th nationally in that category. Junior Alonzo Smith (5-10, 2-8) rushed for 709 yards last year. Smith is averaging 72.0 yards per game this season, albeit with no touchdowns. Junior QB Gus Ragland also is a threat to run, as he emphatically showed while at Moeller High School. Ragland ran for 202 yards and two scores last year and has rushed for one TD this season.

When Miami passes

Ragland (6-1, 215) is the man in Oxford. He engineered Miami’s comeback from an 0-6 start to a 6-6 regular-season finish last year, with 17 TD passes and just one interception in 179 throws. This year, Ragland has completed only 50.7 percent of…
