Since 1990, the Pantone Color Institute has nominated a Color of the Year, predicting a hue that designers and consumers will wear, use and buy for the following 12 months. Today, Pantone announced that the 2018 Color of the Year is Ultra Violet.

Pantone describes it as “an enigmatic purple shade that evokes the inventive spirit and imaginative thinking that challenges the status quo.”

More than just a color, Pantone’s Color of the Year seems to be making a cultural statement.

“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level,” executive director of the Pantone Color Institute Leatrice Eiseman said in a statement.
